The Fourth Mistake :

the second, third, and fourth mistake is a set of three animations which discover and play with issues of process, and contradictions which are already present in much of my music and Krisdy Shindler's paintings. The analytic and momentary is juxtaposed with the lasting and all encompassing, an imprint on the memory, or in this case, the paper. The sound and image create a dialogue, at times tracing the path of the writing, at other times reflecting a particular detail, (be it colour, texture etc.), embracing the complete and final visual structure, or perhaps diverging completely into a sonic environment. Variations and flux between these levels of engagement create vast environmental possibilities for the perceiver, paradoxically from the simplest of origins, the 'micro mark' on paper.

Each animation explores the momentary and transient act of making a mark on paper, a process is constantly in opposition with the resulting picture. The sonic and visual components combine to create a larger structure, through small, yet still very significant components in their own right. Sound is used to explore further the moving image as a process in the creation of a final, and inevitably static art form. Each short animation is a work in motion, an ongoing discovery of the inherent oppositions found within a 'living' drawing: - the organic and man-made, mono and colour, line and shape, all of which exist in relation to each other and cannot stand alone.

Between each animation, about a minute and a half of sound ('reflections') is accompanied by a bright white screen. The reflections use material derived from that used in the animations, yet they are significantly more ambient. Each reflection exists as a landscape, exploring subtleties of texture, and takes the listener on a journey should they wish to explore these subtleties. The purpose of these sections was to create a sense of space in terms of pacing between animations, and to redirect attention beyond the animation or alternatively inside the sound.
